China's Titanium Materials Industry: Rising Power and Ongoing Challenges
China’s titanium materials industry is gaining momentum on the global stage. According to SMM data, China produced approximately 143,000 tons of sponge titanium in 2021, accounting for over 61.6% of global output, up from 54.4% in 2020. Meanwhile, traditional producers like Russia and Japan saw output declines due to geopolitical tensions and weak downstream demand.
Industrial Chain Overview
The upstream segment is dominated by raw material suppliers. Sponge titanium, derived from titanium tetrachloride and further from titanium ores (such as ilmenite and rutile), accounts for over 60% of titanium alloy production costs. Master alloys serve as critical additives in the smelting process. The midstream processing sector is highly fragmented, with intense competition in low- and mid-end markets, causing low profit margins. Titanium’s downstream applications are vast, spanning aerospace, defense, medical, automotive, construction, and more.
Titanium's high strength-to-weight ratio, excellent corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility make it a strategic material. In aerospace, China is accelerating the industrial upgrading of titanium alloys. Government policies have supported the adoption of titanium in jet engines, aircraft structures, and missile systems. Titanium offers 40% less density than steel with similar strength, as well as superior heat resistance, elasticity, and formability.
In 2020, China consumed 17,200 tons of titanium materials for aerospace, and that demand is rising. With the rise of domestic civil aircraft programs, industry analysts estimate that the total demand for titanium alloys over the next 20 years could exceed 570,000 tons, or over 28,000 tons per year. Titanium demand from aviation engine manufacturing alone is forecasted to reach nearly 500,000 tons in that same period.

China’s titanium industry includes major players such as BaoTi, Western Superconducting Technologies (WST), and Western Metal Materials. BaoTi is the largest by capacity, while WST focuses on high-end aerospace materials with strong R&D capabilities and vertical integration.
